The Alte Oper

I just got back from the Alte Oper (The Old Opera House). It's one of the iconic buildings in Frankfurt, and you always need to a show when you're in town. Luckily, I had another free ticket from the Goethe Institut to a Symphony.

I managed to sneak in my camera and get a picture of the stage. It may look like a museum from the outside, but inside it has AMAZING acoustics.

Tonight happened to be a combination of classical and modern music. The second piece before intermission was very modern, and I wasn't too impressed.

It did, however, feature a Viola soloist who played with incredible passion. The audience kept clapping so much afterwards that she came back out after the 6th round of applause and played an incredible encore solo. Somehow she made that little box of wood sound like it was two or even three instruments.

That encore made it all worthwhile.

I then took a stroll down into the financial district and saw a bunch of the skyscrapers up close. I ate at this great Italian restaurant where it's self-service. Basically you're handed a card which keeps track of what you buy, and you go and order your food and drink separately. It's good for the budget minded because there's no added tip.
